The Old Railway Station Museum
Situated in Market Street, it is the first railway station linking Uitenhage to Port Elizabeth. The purpose was to ferry passengers and a number of goods. The quaint little station building was known as “The Doll House”, and was completed in September 1875.
Built in the Gothic style of architecture, it consists of a double storied building with a very high pitched roof and arched windows. The station master occupied the upper apartments.
The cul-de-sac station served Uitenhage for more than 75 years until, in 1951, all activities were transferred to the newly completed through-station on the mainline between Cape Town and Graaff-Reinet.
The building was proclaimed a national monument in 1976.
